Ladynsax is the stage name of Russian Saxophonist Anastasia Vysotskaya, known for her excellent performances, and her ability to fuse electronic and saxophone music. I first spotted her videos a couple of years ago online, and it reminded me of my Dad’s love of the saxophone.  He was also a saxophonist and part of the big band era in the 1930’s & 40’s, (the late Glenn Miller being perhaps the most famous band leader).  He had his own band The New Lyndons, in which my mom was the vocalist...... the message on their publicity cards was “Smile, darn you, smile” ....... but that’s another story for maybe another time!
Ladynsax’s music, as far as I know, is only available online in this country, and some of her popular tunes are ‘Ameno’, ‘Sacrifice’, ‘For You’ and ‘Space’ – all released on albums from 2020 to 2025.  I understand that she was born on 28 April 1989 in Novokuznetsk.  Not a lot of people know that the saxophone was invented in 1841 by a guy called Adolphe Sax, who wanted to create an instrument that would be the loudest of the woodwinds and the most versatile of the brass, and would therefore fill the then vacant middle ground between the two sections.  Listening to Ladynsax, I feel that she has more than fulfilled this role.  I shared a track with Anne a couple of years ago, and although I don’t think she shares my love of female bands and artists, I believe that she appreciates that here we have a genuinely good musician.

The most well known albums that Ladynsax has released in this country are ‘Ameno’ (2021), ‘The Ameno Remixes’ (2022), ‘For You’ (2021), and ‘Sacrifice’ (2020), although she collaborated with Alexander Barabash in 2025 to produce ‘Lounge Zone’ and A-Mase in 2023 with ‘Dreamhouse’.  She also went into a joint venture with Sergey Filippov, and in particular their track ‘Whisper’, wherein I absolutely adore the mix between guitar and saxophone. I’m sure you can appreciate that research..... much as I enjoy it..... into the work of this extremely talented artist is difficult.  Information about her is brief & sketchy, although most of her music seems to be available on the streaming platforms.

Now, decision time – WTF can I request our intrepid Truroian / Casablancan to play?  I can honestly say that there isn’t one track of Ladynsax’s that I dislike, and judging from the comments that are written in English, I don’t think I’m on my own.  I said earlier on that ‘For You’ is perhaps one of her most well-loved tracks, and for this reason I have chosen the studio version, which can be found here. There is a live version of this track that in my opinion is equally as good as the studio one, (so seek it out!), but looking at the video, it extends several minutes into applause and appreciative presentations of flowers.

American singer-songwriter & musician Samia Najimy Finnerty is a Californian by birth – born in Los Angeles on 12 December 1996 to actors Kathy Najimy and Dan Finnerty.  She was named after her maternal grandmother who was of Lebanese origin.  After a fairly uneventful childhood, she moved to New York when she was fifteen and attended York Preparatory School.  After briefly forming a band, Samia went solo and began writing songs for her first studio album which was entitled ‘The Baby’.  This was released on Grand Jury Records, as have all of her subsequent records.  The first track on the album was ‘Pool’ which begins with the last voicemail Finnerty’s grandmother left before passing away in 2015, and she is in fact singing a Lebanese lullaby.  Finnerty described the concept of the album as “emotionally accepting that I need people” and that “I am the baby”.  She released five singles from this album, the first of which was the excellent ‘Is there something in the movies’.....this was NEARLY my choice for Lex to play....very nearly.

In 2021 she released a couple of albums.  First there was ‘The Baby Reimagined’ which was a collection of covers and remixes from her first LP, and then the compilation album ‘’Before the Baby’.  She also released her only E.P. that year, called ‘Scout’ which contained three original songs, plus a cover of When in Rome’s ‘The Promise’.  The E.P. generally received positive views from the music press.  I suppose you could refer to it as a ‘sideline’, but Samia formed the band Peach Fuzz in 2022, and they released an LP ‘Can Mary Dood the Moon?’.  2022 also found Samia writing songs for her January 2023 album ‘Honey’, and six singles were released from this album.  ‘Honey’ also attained positive reviews and when speaking about the album, Finnerty said “Optimism is the saddest thing in the World to me and I have a lot of it”.  I think she was referring to the fact that the album contained both sad and happy personal songs.  Perhaps surprisingly, Samia released 2 other singles in 2023, that didn’t appear on ‘Honey’, one of which was a cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs ‘Maps’.

In 2025, a similar discography pattern emerged, whereby Samia released several singles from her new album ‘Bloodless’ before its release in April.  The album has received mixed reviews, for instance from the N.M.E. who opined that it “thrives on complexities and intricacies”.  A tour is planned for June 2025.  Samia’s musical style has typically been defined as indie-rock and indie-pop, and she has cited a range of musical influences including Lana Del Rey, Nirvana, Father John Misty and Brittany Howard.  Personally I can hear a a lot of another idol of mine who I have blogged about – Cat Power.

I mentioned earlier on that Finnerty moved to New York at the age of fifteen. Indeed she began her musical career there, but moved to Nashville in 2021 for a “less chaotic” environment. Ironically she later moved back to her birth place of Los Angeles, but currently lives in Minneapolis.  She insists that her folks raised her as a feminist and that it is a “deeply embedded part of her identity”.  She adds, that feminist themes in her songwriting are not intentional and that she feels that feminist ideals are inherently part of the female experience.  She does, however insist that rather than writing about a place of empowerment, she is usually writing from a place of desperation or pain.  I have requested Lex to play Samia’s ‘Mad at me” (which also features Papa Mbye) from the ‘Honey’ LP, which can be found here.

You may remember when Lex very kindly let Anne & I compile a guest playlist a few weeks ago, that we chose a Fuzzrider track.  Well, it was Anne actually, but I was well impressed with their work.  There’s not a lot of readily available information on them, but I have found out that they are described as a heavy blues trio from Athens, Greece.  The band was formed by Jim Lord, a.k.a. Lord 13 and also Madleaf, and he’s on guitars and vocals.  Nick Giannoulis, a.k.a. One Man Drop, Blame Canada, and Nochnoy Dozor plays bass guitar, and Brian Velentzas a.k.a. Captain Brian, plays drums.

You can’t just walk into say an H.M.V. shop and buy their records.  They sell their music via their web site, and apart from a 12” limited vinyl edition of ‘Evergreen’, their music is mainly streaming via the free Bandcamp app,  and downloads in MP3, FLAC and more.  Needless to say that 100 pressings of the limited edition 12” has sold out.   As far as I know, they have only made one album which is self titled, and the tremendous track from this LP that we chose a few weeks ago was ‘Black Snake Boogie’.  The album is available on CD, but again only from Bandcamp and other online sources.  The ’Streaming & Download’ digital album costs 5 Euros or more, and the C.D. around twice that price.  I have listened to all eight tracks, and believe me, they’re pretty darn good.

I now move from faraway Greece to Scotland.  The youngest of four daughters, Emily Atkinson a.k.a. Fourth Daughter, has always found her sense of escape in music.  She creates her own brand of euphoric electro from Edinburgh, gaining influence from Rufus Du Sol, Sylvan Esso and Jamie XX.  She produces  lush, textured music paired with emotional lyrics & narrative which are a joy to listen to.  Her Dad was a synthesiser fan, and his CD collection inspired a young 7 year old Emily who began playing piano at that age.   She eventually became classically trained, and whilst attending university, tried playing synths herself, discovering on Pro Tools,  “a World of open possibilities”.

If you’re like me – or even if you haven’t heard her -  you’ll find her music very relaxing, with frontline synths, beautiful soundscapes, plus her own lovely vocals.  It’s been said that listening to Fourth Daughter “feels like bathing in the Balearic sun”.  Be careful of that Balearic sun – I fell asleep and got horribly sunburnt once!  Fourth Daughter took to headlining her own show in 2023 at both Glasgow and Edinburgh.  She also bagged a slot at the BBC’s ‘Introducing Live’ section of the Edinburgh Festival.   It is said that she wears her soul on her sleeve, but she has an undeniable talent as an artist, producer and writer.  I love electronic music, and find her one of the rising talents of that genre. Emily has released two EP’s - ‘Deja Vu’ and ‘Full Bloom’ and caught attention from Radio One with last year’s ‘Higher (Just a Feeling)’ being deemed as the station’s track of the week at the end of September 2024, and, you lucky devils, you can find that track right here.

Adwaith translates as ‘Reaction’, and they are a Welsh language indie band from the town of Carmarthen in West Wales.  The membership consists of Hollie Singer (vocals & guitar), Gwenllian Anthony (bass, keyboards & mandolin), and Heledd Owen (drums).  They have made three albums, all on Libertino Records – ‘Melyn’ (2018);  Bato Mato (2022); and ‘Solas’ (2025).  The first two LP’s both won the Welsh Music Prize for best album in their release year, making Adwaith the first act to receive the award twice.  Their home town doesn’t bring back many happy memories for Anne & me, in that last year we were trying to find the nearby Gwili Steam Railway, which had relocated its headquarters from Bronwydd Arms to Abergwili Junction, on the outskirts of Carmarthen.  The sat nav took us to Matalan, on a retail park, which clearly didn’t seem right. After asking various people directions (one of whom was a Police Officer), and also getting lost again in the town, we missed our booked train, only to find that we weren’t the only ones!

Singer and Anthony grew up together in the Welsh town and have known each other since pre-school age.  They formed a band as a duo, but recruited Heledd Owen at their first gig.  A guy called Gruff Wyn Owen, who is Head of Libertino Records, took the trio on.  Singer and Heledd Owen study music at Universities in South Wales & London respectively, whilst Anthony is employed by Carmarthen venue The Parrot. In the daytime, this venue has a well stocked bottle shop of beers & ciders, a cafe, and a vinyl/CD store.  At night, the venue changes into an entertainment emporium, with live music, poetry, comedy, art and plays.  I mentioned earlier in this blog that the Welsh word Adwaith actually translates as Reaction – in a recent interview, Hollie Singer said “One of our mothers asked what ‘reaction’ was in Welsh, and we just thought ‘Oh that would make a cool name!’”

Adwaith first appeared on the Welsh language music scene at Womanby Street’s Castle Emporium in 2017, and since then have played a host of venues such as ‘Festival No. 6 in Portmeirion;  the Swn Festival in Cardiff;  Ty Pawb in Wrexham;  Cardigan Castle;  and the Green Man Festival in the Brecon Beacons.  The band have performed at ‘Wales goes Pop’ and ‘Future is Female’ Festival, plus they started their own ‘Femme’ nights (named after their single) intended to offer a safe space for women.  In 2022 Adwaith performed at the Glastonbury Festival on the BBC Introducing Stage, and in 2024 recorded their third album ‘Solas’ in West Wales, Lisbon and the Outer Hebrides – the  album was released in February of 2025, and to coincide with this, the band are taking part in a U.K. and European tour.  They are supporters of Welsh independence, believing that Britain is relying on Westminster and England too much.

Had he lived on past 2004, I am sure that legendary DJ John Peel would have championed the cause and the music of current Welsh Bands, just as he did during his lifetime with bands such as Anhrefn, Super Furry Animals, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Llwybr LLaethog and of course Melys from Betws–y–Coed, who not a lot of people know, attained Number One in 2001’s ‘Festive Fifty’ with ‘Chinese Whispers’.  I still play the track via its original C90 tape!  The track that I have asked Lex to play is from the ‘Solas’ album and is called ‘Coeden Anniben’, which can be found here.

Mannequin Pussy (where DO they get these names from?) are an American punk and indie rock band.  They hale from Philadelphia, and whilst they were originally formed in 2010, the current line up only dates back to 2021, and consists of Marisa ‘Missy’ Dabice (vocals & guitar), Kaleen Reading (drums), Colins ‘Bear’ Regisford (bass & vocals) and Maxine Steen (guitar).  On live performances they are joined by multi-instrumentalist Carolyn Haynes.  They have released four studio albums since formation, but just one with the current line up, which is ‘I got Heaven’, plus an EP called ‘Perfect’.  In 2021 the band released the EP and 2 singles were taken from it, which were ‘Control’ and ‘Perfect’.  No lesser person than ‘Pitchfork’ journalist Arielle Gordon gave the record 7.2 out of 10, and noted that it introduced subtle shifts in sound and structure.

A major setback happened at the start of an Autumn tour, when the band members awoke to find that their 2012 Econoline touring van, with trailer attached, had been stolen and in excess of $50,000 worth of equipment had gone with it.  The tour was forced to continue with borrowed equipment from other bands. A couple of years later, in August 2023. Mannequin Pussy bought back the rights to their masters from their former label Tiny Engines, and then announced their own company, Romantic Records, which releases records on Epitaph!.  This is where it gets slightly confusing – the band released what was to become the title track of forthcoming LP ‘I got Heaven’ as a single well before the album’s release, which is unusual in that it’s generally the other way round, i.e. you release an LP, and a single is THEN taken from it.  To make things even more confusing, the band, after forming their own Romantic Records label, reissued their second album ‘Romantic’.

Mannequin Pussy toured the United States, Spain and Portugal in the Fall of 2023, and the band finally announced that their LP ‘I got Heaven’ would be released in March 2024, on the Epitaph label, just like their EP previously.  It was formatted as a digital download, CD, vinyl and streaming.  The band also released the song ‘Pledge’ on their own YouTube Channel, and Dabice said “So many times in our life, we find ourselves being influenced from the outside.  People try to control us, our beliefs, our movements, our identities, our dress”  The video sought to narrate a woman’s experience where her movements are controlled by a man by the others that surround her and the powerful declaration that she is able to make to herself, when she can free herself of the people who seek to conform her.

I am guessing that you, dear reader, if you’re already a fan on Mannequin Pussy, will be aware of most of what I have written, and you enjoy their music.  For those of you that haven’t come across them yet, they may sound like many other girl-led bands.  All I would say is give them a chance.  Give them a few listens and there are plenty of music videos now available online.  Personally, I’m a fan of the title track of the ‘I got Heaven’ album, and I’m asking Lex to play the version that was live on KEXP, which can hopefully be found hereI say hopefully, because as I type these notes, Lex is on his way to Casablanca and I’m unsure as to when he’ll be fully “set up”.  I’m really looking forward to his show, because as you know, he’s had thoughts of broadcasting from the balcony of the Casablanca flat!

30th March 2025

Titus writes:

The three piece indie rock band Honeyglaze hail from South London. and were formed by Anouska Sokolow, Tim Curtis and Yuri Shibuichi.  They released a self titled album in 2022, followed by a second, ‘Real Deal’ in 2024. Anouska is the vocalist and plays guitar; Tim plays bass and Yuri drums.  Anouska was originally a solo artist, but having met up with the other two shortly before the Covid 19 pandemic, they decided to form a band, and worked on their debut LP at a place of isolation.  Upon watching one of their early You Tube videos, producer Dan Carey signed them to his label Speedy Wunderground.  They recorded and released a single ’’Burglar’, and festival-wise, the trio  performed at Green Man and Swn in Wales.   Prior to the release of their first album, the band released the track ‘Shadows’ which was co-directed by the band Sorry, who rather spookily I was originally going to compile my blog on, prior to listening to Honeyglaze.  The self titled LP hit the top spot in the Independent UK Album Breakers Chart.

Honeyglaze were soon to support Wet Leg on the UK leg of their 2022 tour, and they also opened the ‘BBC Music Introducing Stage’ at the Reading and Leeds Festivals.  They also gained valuable festival experience by appearing at the Great Escape Festival, the Victorious Festival and the Latitude Festival. The band signed up with Fat Possum Records in 2024. and it was on this label that they released their second album ‘Real Deal’.  In fairly quick succession they released from the album,  the singles ‘Don’t’, Cold Caller’ and ‘Pretty Girls’, and it was the video for ‘Don’t’ that was nominated for Best Rock / Alternative Video Newcomer at the 2024 UK Music Video Awards.

The band was asked about what particular influences they used when compiling their debut self-titled LP, and the members replied that Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band, Sasami, Squid, Dirty Projectors and Puma Blue played a big part.  Specifically Sokolow stated that she admired the strong vocals of Angel Olsen and Adrianne Lenker. Now shamefacedly, despite my love of new & alternative music, I have to admit that I haven’t heard of any of these people!  Redemption time though, because when Honeyglaze were asked to name their influences for the ‘Real Deal’ album, they named the Zombies rhythms, Destiny’s Child’s riffs (really?), and unbelievably Scott Walker’s songwriting.......guess what?  I’ve heard of all three!

‘The Guardian’ described the band as “One to watch” and seemed to note a Titus ‘Not a lot of people know that’ fact when they disclosed that Honeyglaze only became a band three days before their first gig, when Sokolow realised that she badly need back up. I suppose you could say that Tim Curtis and Yuri Shibuichi ended up sticking around  MUCH longer than originally intended. When looking back a few years, Sokolow rather simplistically summed things up by apparently stating that she felt that she had suddenly become an adult, was in need of a job, and was going to be a full-time musician! Having listened to both albums, I personally think that whilst the first record is good, ‘Real Deal’ marks real progression.  I have requested Lex to play ‘Ghost’ from this, which can be found here.

First, Anne & I would like to sincerely thank Lex for allowing us to form a joint playlist for last week’s show. It was great to hear some of our favourite tunes played on Uknova radio, and I was delighted to dedicate  a Brandi Carlile track to my wonderful cousin Melanie, who is a fan of this talented artist.  As always, during this last week I have listened to many tracks from (mainly) new-ish bands and artists, and I have been particularly impressed by an American singer/songwriter, whose work had previously escaped these old ears – Lizzy McAlpine.

Elizabeth Catherine McAlpine was born in September 1999, to father Mark McAlpine and mother Robin Lacey.  She grew up in Narberth, Pennsylvania in the suburbs of Philadelphia with her sibling Emma and has written music since she was in 6th grade.  Lizzy studied songwriting at Berklee College of Music in Boston, before leaving in her junior year to pursue music on a fulltime basis.  Devoted father Mark passed away suddenly, of natural causes on 13 March 2020, and since then Lizzy has dedicated track 13 to him, on each of her three albums.  These are ‘Headstones and Land Mines’ from her first album ‘Give me a minute’; ‘Chemtrails’ from her second LP ‘Five seconds Flat’; and ‘March’ from her latest album ‘Older’.  The tracks reference him as the Earth, the Air and the Water respectively.  To me, she shows broad similarity to another favourite of mine – Cat Power - who I seem to remember blogging about last year. She writes lovely lyrics, which often tell a sad story.

The ‘Dallas Observer’ said that her first album was “One of the best” of 2020, and the BBC Media Centre named her as “A talented up and coming artist”.  Several publications called her a “TikTok star” and even though Lizzy dislikes this title, it is a fact that by April 2021, she had over eight million views of a then unreleased song ‘You ruined the 1975’ on this platform.  I can hear you impatiently saying “But please tell us about the kind of music she actually plays”.......I would answer that she has been mainly referred to as an “Indie pop folk singer” , but personally I can also detect some bedroom pop, jazz and r & b.  Her collaborators include Jacob Collier, Dodie, Tom Rosenthal, Ben Kessler, Noah Kahan, Niall Horan and Finneas.  (Not a a lot of people know that Finneas, is the talented brother of Billie Eilish).

To promote her third album ‘Older’, McAlpine is embarking on a tour of North America and Europe in April 2025.  In addition to her three studio albums, she has made three EP’s and released around 24 singles either as lead artist or featured artist.   It seems to me that most, if not all of her songs’ lyrics are personal to her, and these lyrics are skilfully projected throughout her writing career. As one reviewer on YouTube said “All of your songs are so peacefully beautiful – thank you for giving us the pleasure of being able to listen to them”.   I like nearly all of the songs on the three albums, but have asked Lex to play ‘Headstones & Land Mines’ which in my opinion is a beautifully sad way to end her first album. It can be found here.

They are led by Jacob Slater, who, having left home at the age of seventeen, lived in London for five years and then after his band The Dead Pretties split up, he moved to Newquay (for those of you who are asking “why?” – I’m sorry to say that I don’t know).  In Newquay he found odd labouring jobs and worked as a surfing instructor, whilst in his spare time, he wrote music.  During this time, Slater landed an acting role, playing the great Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols in the mini series ‘Pistol’ , which was directed by Danny Boyle.  Jacob cited Neil Young and Joni Mitchell as musical influences – this guy’s got class!

Wunderhorse was formed during the Covid 19 pandemic as a solo project, and when asked about the name ‘Wunderhorse’, Slater informed the Press that it came from the 1950’s TV programme ‘Champion the Wonder Horse’.  You won’t be at all surprised that I remember this programme well, and I’m pretty sure Lex will as well.  It used to be a major talking point at our Primary School, which was originally called Tettenhall C of E. School.  Jacob then joined with Jamie Staples (vocals, guitar),  Pete Woodin (bass),  and Harry Tristan Fowler (guitar) to form what is now the band Wunderhorse.   Now not a lot of people know that Harry Fowler is the son of the legendary Kim Wilde, I honestly joketh not.

The Band’s first album ‘Cub’ was released in October 2022, on Communion records, and the songs therein were all written by Jacob Slater.  The LP was was critically acclaimed as being one of the best of that year, by the N.M.E.,  Riot and Far Out, and the album was described respectively as “A warming blues/garage/indie fire, best enjoyed in its entirety and at high volume”  “a brilliant catalogue of teenage life – ill fated love, drugs, self destruction, depression, as well as youthful joy – all to a rousing soundtrack that harks back to the 90’s” and “melodic reflection from a man growing into himself”.  2022 was quite a year for the band, as apart from the success of ‘Cub’, they toured as supporting act for other bands Fontaines D.C., The Pixies and Foals.  A tour of the U.S. followed in the Spring of 2023 and Wunderhorse played Glastonbury in the Summer of that year.  I see from the provisional line up of Glasto ‘25, that they are scheduled to play there on the Friday of the Festival.

Last year, Wunderhorse released their eagerly awaited second album ‘Midas’ – on 30 August 2024 to be precise, and again it was on Communion Records.  It was produced by former Rolling Stones producer Craig Silvey and was preceded by the release of five singles, all of which are on the ‘Midas’ album.  Like ‘Cub’, ‘Midas’ received critical acclaim from the music press and charted at number six in early September ‘24, in the U.K. Albums Chart.  I have avoided the five singles in my choice of track, and have requested Lex to play ‘Cathedrals’, which can be found here.  It is perhaps the most divisive track on the LP, as Reddit  comments have ranged from “ 10/10 Banger with great guitar riff” to “the weakest track on the album”.  Personally I love the lyrics & guitar riff, so give it a few tries!
