This is my final blog of 2024, as I shall be away for New Year, and I have chosen a pioneer of the guitar on the internet, Laura Cox, to write about.  Laura has led the way for many young guitarists, is a multi instrumentalist and is now at the forefront of the current landscape of guitarists in France and beyond.   “France?” I hear you say, “With a name like Laura Cox?”. Let me explain......Laura was born in France on 24 November 1990 to an English father and a French mother.  She first started playing the guitar at the age of 14, using a cheap classical guitar that her aunt gave to her, and her first electric guitar was a Squier Showmaster.  At the age of 16, she started her own channel on a well known site that displays videos & music, and this built her a large audience.  By 2008 she was not only posting cover versions and guitar solos, but also uploading self penned music. Until she was able to turn professional, she worked in a recording studio and a guitar shop.

Following her online success of gaining several million views, she formed her own rock band in Paris, giving her first hand experience of playing to a live audience.  Laura has used a variety of guitars, such as Gibson Les Paul, Fender Telecaster and Fender Stratocaster.  The Laura Cox Band released its first studio album ‘Hard Blues Shot’ in 2017, and followed this up with ‘Burning Bright’ in 2019.  Laura chose to release the third album, ‘Head Above Water, a year or so ago, in just her name.  She chose to re-invent herself, and recorded the album at the World famous ICP Studios in Brussels.  You will hear on this, that she plays precision guitar, blending traditional rock with blue grass with astonishing ease. She illustrates that she is a more than competent guitarist and that she is a driving force in a new generation of rock guitarists.  For her third studio album and from then onstage, she chose not to play as joint guitarist with Mathieu Albiac, and instead utilised a keyboard player.

For the ‘Head Above Water’ album, Laura chose not to work with the band in her native France, and holed up in Portugal by herself, to write and demo the record’s 11 tracks.  You can hear how she shines as a multi-instrumentalist, exploring outside her comfort zone, and integrates her banjo playing with the aid of lap steel into a few songs.  She apparently wanted the end result of the third album to be less heavy than the first two albums, with a decided ‘Southern’, blue grass and country influence.

She is unusual in that when she writes, she produces the guitar riff first, and then adds other instrumentation, at the same time deciding what type of vocals the track should have. All in all Laura has worked hard to become an accomplished guitarist and vocalist in what is still a very competitive sector within the rock music industry. Some would argue that it is an extremely male-dominated sector.  If you have never heard of her, then please give her a listen – I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you hear her perform her own material and cover versions.   Undoubtedly music journalists have proclaimed that she is heavily influenced by X, Y, and Z guitarists, but I reckon it’s pretty cool, in the track I’ve asked Lex to play, (as one commentator put it) to hear of a French musician, singing in English at the Pol’and’Rock Festival.  It not only proves that music is a universal language, but also in simpler terms, that Laura Cox rocks!  The track is ‘Going Down’ and can be found here. I wish you all a peaceful New Year and hope that 2025 is kind to you.

Rather than do my usual blog, where I tell you about a band or artist, I thought I’d do a review of the various blogs & happenings in 2024.  Remember, you can check all blogs and playlists out by going to the archive section on www.wtfisthis.ovh (or use the search box, bottom right).

I started the year telling you about a band that I really feel strongly about – in a nutshell I cannot understand why the Would Be’s never had any commercial success. To me, like The Undertones were to Peely, they were the perfect pop band, and whist they never ventured into any obtuse genre, they just played pop brilliantly.  I still play their records and always will – in fact not a lot of people know that I shall have the words ‘My radio sounds different in the dark’ embossed on my tombstone. I also wrote about the late, indefinable eccentric that was Ivor Cutler, and I was happy that this had good feedback from IRC (judging by the log). Young Ivor wrote some bizarre stuff, that John Peel once referred to as “An assault on the reason”.  As the Winter drew slowly to a close, I wrote about 70 Gwen Party, Skimmer, Biosphere, Aphex Twin, and Doctor John Cooper-Clark......the man who described his own appearance on ‘Desert Island Discs’ as “All the finality of a suicide note, without actually topping yourself”.  We looked at the career of The Fall, plus the Sex Clark Five, and the raucous punk band that are The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.  It was pleasing to read another blog – this time on Northern Soul – by Paul Mason.

Many people have said to me over the years that I am privileged to have been at the first ever Glastonbury Festival.  They are right – the music was magnificent, but please let me reiterate what I said in my blog, that there were few other  pleasantries about the event.  It was uncomfortable, not particularly well organised, had dreadful sanitary facilities, and a very limited choice of food.  However we did enjoy a glass of Worthy Farm milk, as part of the admission fee of £1.  Fast forward to 2024, and contrary to most thoughts in 1970, this is now perhaps the most Internationally known festival, and nowadays, tickets are sold online, selling out in a matter of minutes.  This year, I thought PJ Harvey put in an exceptional performance, and the Vaccines played an explosive session on the Woodsies stage.  Predictably the headline acts were Dua Lipa, Coldplay, Shania Twain, and Seasick Steve.  Talking of Dua Lipa, many of her adoring fans sat through Polly Jean’s set, in order to ‘reserve’ their place when their heroin eventually took to the same stage.  They surely must have wondered what on earth they had come to, listening to tracks from ‘Let England Shake’ and ‘The Hope Six Demolition Project’ !!!!

By this time we were well into the festivals season, both at home and abroad, and most festival goers really enjoy the open air and the feeling of togetherness & happiness.  I’m sure there are far less crimes committed at festivals than in some cities. I won’t painstakingly go through each festival, as there are so many.  Increasingly popular are the extended sets that DJ’s perform such as at “Tomorrowland”, where top DJ’s like Charlotte de Witte play sets in excess of five hours to a participative audience.  There is nearly always a fantastic light show and high energy dancing – oh how I wish I was young again!

I talked of favourable comments via the I.R.C. and these were well received when Lex “handed over the reins” to Anne & I in the Summer and we chose the playlist of some memorable tunes we have enjoyed.  I also did a blog on the duo Underworld, which also received good feedback. I’ve tried to cover all genres where I believe there is a hidden talent , such as in reggae, country music, African music (particularly soukous). I’m often asked which is my favourite and the truth is anything that’s good to my ageing ears.  Of all the blogs I have compiled this year, I enjoyed an Autumn offering I did, of the new band The Last Dinner Party most. Apart from the fact that ALL members of this band can really play, they have a lead singer in Abi, who is a genuine show person with great stage presence.

I think the track title of the year must go to Katina, with ‘Don’t stick stickers on my paper knickers’ – and Lex played this track way back in March.  Bands / artists to look out for in 2025? I’d say The Last Dinner Party, The Castellows, Wet Leg, Japanese Breakfast and Pom Pom Squad to name but 5.  Album of the year? Well, it’s officially classed as an EP, but The Last Dinner Party’s ‘Prelude to Ecstasy’ gets my vote every time.  I’m sure many of you have different views – whatever they are, I respect them.

I have asked Lex to play something rather different this week.  It’s seasonal in that it’s about Christmas, and it’s a song that The Pogues very narrowly missed out on, by not achieving the coveted ‘Christmas No. 1’ way back in 1987.(It reached No. 2, missing out to the Pet Shop Boys’ ‘Always on my mind’).  This was when Christmas number one’s weren’t arguably so predictable as they are today.  I refer of course to ‘Fairy Tale of New York’, but this is a different version, performed by Glen Hansard, Lisa O’Neill and the remaining Pogues, at the funeral of Shane McGowan, held at St Mary’s of the Rosary Church, Nenagh, County Tipperary.   It can be found here - all the very best for the Festive Season.

I’m sure that all of you statisticians out there will remember that on 14 April this year, I wrote about Country Music and specifically about Laura Cantrell.  Well, I’ve covered many genres before & since, but this blog returns to Country Music now, and I’m greatly enthusiastic about a new band called The Castellows, who I have been listening to a great deal this week.  As I said in the Spring, Country Music has really encountered a twenty first century upsurge, yet has always been true to its roots, and none more so than with The Castellows.  The membership is made up of Eleanor and Powell Balkom, who are two of triplets, and younger sister Lily.  Interestingly, Powell plays banjo, which has always been a feature of Country Music.  They originate from Georgetown, Quitman County, Georgia, and grew up on a cattle farm.  However, since signing a record deal with Warner Brothers and  Warner Music collectively, they decided to move to Nashville around a year ago.

How do you come up with a band name like The Castellows? Well, not a lot of people know that Castellow was the sisters’ great grandmother’s maiden name.  The surname came to Ireland, and specifically County Mayo via the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1172.  As I’m sure you know, Ireland experienced a dramatic decrease in its population during the nineteenth century, with many problems such as famine and disease.  Many Irish folk emigrated to North America, with a promise of work & freedom, and this Castellow family followed this trend.  The Castellow motto was ‘Ne te quaesiviris extra’ meaning ‘Seek nothing beyond your sphere’ – I’m sure most of us will not have come across that motto before!

The Castellows released their first EP in February 2024 and called it ’A little goes a long way’. This record was released on CD, streaming and digital download. The track ‘I know it will never end’  was nominated for Country Music Television’s digital-first performance of the year at the CMT Music Awards.   Prior to that, after posting cover songs to their Instagram and Tik Tok accounts, they released their debut single ‘No. 7 Road’ which, along with five other tunes  on the EP was penned by the sisters.  Ironically, the one tune that the band recorded as a cover version (‘Hurricane’)  was the most successful single released from the EP.  Going back even further, the trio had never considered a career in music, but decided to give it a go following considerable interest from the music media and industry.

I think you’ll find that The Castellows music is traditional but modern, and when on tour they employ various touring session musicians such as Justin Maynard on backing fiddle and guitar,..  The common thread (apart from their DNA) is their three part harmonies which IMO tend to blend, in order to create one voice, if that doesn’t sound too crazy!  The band are currently touring their own country, and next year will venture further afield into Canada, Panama, Berlin, London, Rotterdam & Belfast amongst other places.   Being a new group, they haven’t yet made an album, but on the previously mentioned EP, there are as many as seven tracks, and the one that I have requested Lex to play this week is a live version of  ‘No. 7 Road’, recorded via Red Bull Jukebox, Nashville.  This can be found here.

This blog is a first for me, in that I am featuring an all girl band for the second week running, having spent hours and hours researching.  The Last Dinner Party are a British Indie Rock Band formed in London in 2021.  I say 2021 because the members actually met in 2020 during Freshers’ week at King’s College, London, and decided to form a band, having attended gigs together at The Windmill. They apparently felt inspired by being a part of the scene around the venue, and were at first called The Dinner Party. The name was “inspired by the idea of a huge debauched dinner party where people came together to celebrate with a hedonistic banquet”.  Like in many instances, the covid pandemic put the skids on any live performances, and to a certain extent, rehearsing, so the band didn’t perform live until their first gig at The George, London in November 2021.  The group took a major step forward by supporting the Rolling Stones at the Hyde Park gig in July 2022.

The band renamed themselves The Last Dinner Party when they signed to Island Records, to avoid confusion with the jazz band Dinner Party, and their debut and hugely successful single ‘Nothing Matters’ was released in April 2023.  That year the band played at Glastonbury and Latitude, plus a live session for the BBC Radio 6 Music Show ‘New Music Fix Friday’. They were popular in media circles and  were arguably lucky enough to appear on Jools Holland’s TV programme in the Autumn of 2023.  They released their first (and so far only) studio album ‘Prelude to Ecstasy’ in February 2024, and they were not only nominated for, but also won the coveted ‘Rising Star’ award at the Brits this year.  In October 2024 they released a compilation LP ‘Prelude to Ecstasy: Acoustics and Covers’ which included IMO a superb cover of the Sparks classic ‘This town ain’t big enough for both of us’ (more about that later).

Their style was described by ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine as “art-rock bombast’, whatever that means.  Lead vocalist Abi has been compared to the late Freddie Mercury in that she seems onstage to be a natural extrovert & show person.  Just in case you were wondering that I had omitted to list the current  band members......well, I hadn’t forgotten. They are Abigail Morris, lead vocals; Lizzie Mayland, vocals, guitar and flute; Emily Roberts, lead guitar, mandolin, flute, vocals; Georgia Davies, bass and vocals; Aurora Nishevci, keyboards and vocals.  For live touring performances they use Casper Miles on drums.  The Last Dinner Party have also toured, and (not a lot of people know this) their first gig of their 2023 UK tour was at Blackpool Central  Library, as part of the ‘Get it loud in Libraries’ week. This tour was followed by a U.S. one, and this year they have been touring Europe, the U.K and Australia, supporting amongst others Florence and the Machine.

I mentioned ‘This town ain’t big enough for both of us’ earlier on. Of the many blogs I’ve written over the last fourteen months or so, I’ve picked a request track for Lex to play on his programme. Sometimes it’s been close! On this occasion however, my decision was the closest yet, and ‘This town’ just missed out.  However, despite not being a cover versions person, this rendition of the 1974 Sparks’ song is in my opinion, quite superb and worth a listen or two. It can be found by clicking here, if you’d like to do that. I have been spoilt for choice by this extremely talented new band and my choice of track for Lex to play on ‘WTF is this’ this week is a live version of ‘Sinner’ which can be found here.

The Beaches were formed in Toronto over ten years ago and are a Canadian all-girl band.  As in most of the blogs that I compile, their line-up has changed, but is currently Jordan Miller, Kylie Miller, Leandra Earl and Eliza Enman-McDaniel.  Despite recording 2 EP’s in the 2010’s, it wasn’t until 2017, having signed to Universal Records, that they released a debut album, called ‘Late Show’, which was a big success, leading them to win the 2018 Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year.  At its birth, the band members knew each other well, as in their early teens, sisters Jordan & Kylie plus Eliza, got together with Megan Fitchett to form Done with Dolls.  In 2013 Fitchett was replaced by Leandra Earl, and the quartet renamed the band after the Toronto neighbourhood, where the sisters and Enman-McDaniel grew up.

From that first LP referred to above, two singles were released ‘Money’, and then ‘T Shirt’ which peaked at No. 1 in the Billboard Canada Rock Chart – I think that’s a first for this blog!   Now, not a lot of people know about a couple of facts here.......( i ) The Beaches opened for the Rolling Stones’ 2019 ‘No Filter’ tour, for their sole Canadian appearance.  ( ii ) Bizarrely and by way of direct contrast, The Beaches provided the pre-game entertainment for the 107th Grey Cup in Calgary.  Strange but true, so please trust me.

After recording two more EP’s, the band announced that their second album ‘Blame My Ex’ would be ready for September 2023.  From this album, the band released as a single ‘Blame Brett’ (which was based on the relationship break up of Jordan Miller and Brett Emmons of The Glorious Sons), and this emulated ‘T Shirt’ by reaching No. 1 on Canada’s Billboard Rock Chart.  Success seemed  to follow the band in that ‘Blame My Ex’ was not only shortlisted for, but also won the Juno Award for Rock Album of the Year.  ‘Blame Brett’ went viral on Tik Tok.  It was described by Billboard as “poppier than their previous releases, with the heavy guitar tone swapped for reverb”. The single received airplay on Sirius channels, and was also played by many American Terrestrial radio stations.  Mainly due to the success of this single and album, the band embarked on a North American tour in 2023, including a performance at the World–famous Lollapalooza.  The tour was mostly sold out and introduced a much younger audience to them.  Broadly speaking, I remember the self-same thing happening to my hero John Peel.   In his ‘punk-loving’ years, the average age of his audience considerably shrunk, but the actual numbers listening to the great man at least doubled.

A Compilation Album called ‘Sisters not Twins’ (The Professional Lovers Album) won the Juno for Rock Album Of the Year in 2022, which combined material from their EP’s, ‘The Beaches’, ‘Heights’, ‘The Professional’ and ‘Future Lovers’, and this compilation was well received by the music press and fans alike.  In addition to the three albums and four EP’s, the band have released sixteen singles and nineteen official music videos.  Their music genre has been described as “Indie rock – dance rock – post punk revival – garage rock revival”, but I would simply put them in my “good” category.  The track I have asked Lex to play is the live Coal Sessions version of ‘If a tree falls’, originally from their second album ‘Blame my Ex’, and this can be found here.

The KLF are one of the most obtuse, anti-establishment, anti-commercial bands I have ever encountered, and I’m sure I speak for many others who hold similar opinions.  KLF actually stands for Kopyright Liberation Front, but the band have also been known as The Timelords, The Justified Ancients of Mu-Mu, the JAMS, K Foundation, 2K, and K2 Plant Hire.  They originated in Liverpool & London and pioneered a genre called Stadium House, which was in effect rave music with a pop-rock production plus sampled crowd noise.  Their founder members were Scottish musician Bill Drummond (a.k.a. King Boy D) and English musician Jimmy Cauty (a.k.a. Rockman Rock), and they remain to this day.  Not a lot of people know that Cauty co-founded cult band The Orb, who were championed by John Peel.  During the 1990’s the KLF produced many chart hit records, such as ‘3 a.m.Eternal’, & ‘Last Train to Trancentral’ (that is not a spelling mistake – this is the way they chose to spell what was the name of their studios).

They frequently indulged in cynical, anarchic or situationist manifestations – none more so than their ‘farewell’ performance at the 1992 Brit Awards.  Here, the band appeared with one of my favourite grindcore bands Extreme Noise Terror, and performed a version of ‘3a.m. Eternal’.  It was Drummond’s original intention to disembowel a dead sheep onstage, but this intention didn’t come to fruition due to Extreme Noise Terror’s vegetarian beliefs, and also the intervention of BBC Lawyers.  The appearance of the KLF & ENT, was concluded by Drummond firing blanks from an automated weapon over the heads of the crowd! Promoter and Narrator Scott Piercing announced over the public address system “The KLF have now left the music business”.  Later that evening the band dumped the dead sheep at the entrance to one of the post awards parties with the message “I died for you – bon appetit”.  In another bizarre piece of anarchy on 23 August 1994, on the Island of Jura they burnt a million pounds in cash in protest about the corrupt music industry, but vowed to be back within 23 years.  I somehow think that the number 23 was important to them.

In the weeks following the Brit Awards, the band issued a statement confirming their retirement and the deletion of their back catalogue. “We have been following a wild and wounded, glum and glorious shit but shining path these past five years. The last two of which has led us up onto the commercial high ground. We are at a point where the path is about to take a sharp turn from these sunny uplands, down into a netherworld of we know not what.  For the foreseeable future there will be no further record releases from us – as of now all of our past releases are deleted and if we meet further along , be prepared – our disguise may be complete”. Select magazine called it “The last grand gesture.  The most heroic act of public self destruction in the history of pop”.  The anarchist band Chumbawamba apparently expressed their admiration for the KLF’s anti commercial stance.  The KLF’s Brit Award Statuette was later found buried in a field near Stonehenge.

Twenty three years after the burning of a million pounds,  the KLF kept to their word and arrived in Liverpool in typical style.  At 23 seconds past midnight on 23 August 2017, Drummond & Cauty appeared in an Ice Cream van with Ukrainian insignia to kick start their own version of book signing, followed by three days of obscure events, like selling goods (such as a Starbucks’ cup) at £20.23 per item.  A 2017 piece in The Guardian noted that “In the 23 years since their disappearance, nobody else has come up with anything that matches the duo’s extraordinary career”.  Everything in this article aside, it’s the music that matters to me and I always felt that the band made pretty darn good records.   I have asked Lex to play ‘What time is love?’ from the ‘White Room’ album which can be found here.

Titus is away on holiday this week, so sadly no blog from him. However! On next weeks' playlist I have a  Serge Gainsbourg tune, so I thought I would post a few words about his life, career and legacy (courtesy of CHATGPT)....

Serge Gainsbourg (1928–1991) was a groundbreaking French singer, songwriter, actor, and provocateur whose impact on music, film, and French pop culture is still deeply felt. Known for his eclectic style, Gainsbourg was a chameleon of the music world, blending genres from chanson and jazz to reggae, rock, and electronic music. His lyrics, often filled with dark humor, sensuality, and controversial themes, made him both adored and criticized. Gainsbourg’s career spanned over four decades, and his legacy includes his role as a master lyricist and a significant figure in popularizing and evolving French pop music.

Born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents in Paris, Gainsbourg’s early life was marked by the trials of living under Nazi-occupied France. His family fled Paris during World War II to escape anti-Semitic persecution. Originally trained as a painter, Gainsbourg only turned to music in his twenties, starting his career in small clubs before gaining a following.

Gainsbourg released his debut album, "Du Chant à la Une!", in 1958, showcasing a unique blend of French chanson and jazz. His lyrical style was quickly recognized for its wit, sophistication, and often scandalous content, which would become his trademark.

In the 1960s, he collaborated with popular artists like Brigitte Bardot, and later Jane Birkin, who would become his long-time partner and muse. His 1969 song with Birkin, "Je t'aime... moi non plus," was banned in several countries due to its explicit content and sensual themes. Despite—or perhaps because of—its notoriety, the song became a hit and remains one of his best-known works.

Gainsbourg’s style evolved constantly. In the 1970s, he delved into reggae, becoming one of the first major French artists to incorporate it into his music. This genre shift was highlighted by his album "Aux armes et cætera" (1979), a reggae rendition of the French national anthem, which sparked national outrage and added to his infamous image. Gainsbourg's work was frequently explicit, exploring themes of sexuality, death, and societal taboos.

His live persona was equally provocative; he was notorious for his drunken antics, public feuds, and politically charged performances. One of his most infamous moments came in 1984 when he appeared intoxicated on a television program with Whitney Houston, declaring he wanted to sleep with her—an incident emblematic of his unpredictable, boundary-pushing nature.

Gainsbourg’s relationship with Birkin made them one of France's most celebrated celebrity couples. They had a daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, who went on to become a respected actress and musician herself. Despite his troubled personal life and struggles with alcoholism and health issues, Gainsbourg was prolific in his later years, constantly experimenting with new sounds and ideas until his death in 1991 from a heart attack.

Today, Serge Gainsbourg is celebrated as a French icon and revered as a daring artist who defied conventions. His influence on French music and pop culture is enormous, inspiring countless musicians, writers, and artists across generations.

Note by the typist:  Even though they can hardly speak a word of French, most "successful" A-level students know all about Gainsburg as he's on the syllabus.

Whenever I take part in one of those ridiculous quizzes, such as in pubs or on holiday, I always name my team “Friends of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry”, as it’s quite fun to see the MC getting him or herself tongue twisted, when the scores are announced.  That apart, I have followed this excellent band since formation in Leeds, which was as long ago as 1981, and inevitably they have undergone many changes of personnel since.  The band currently comprises Chris Reed, Dave Wolfenden, Ding Archer & Martin Henderson but they have used 13 other members  over their career.

The group’s genre is generally known as Gothic Rock or Post Punk, although they have always distanced themselves from Goth, preferring to say that they were primarily inspired by MC5. They were signed by the aspiring Red Rhino record label (later Cherry Red) and immediately released ‘Beating my Head’ as their debut single, which was unchanged from the demo that they had already completed.  They were encouraged that this song made a strong appearance in the NME Indie record chart.  Wolfenden became heavily involved with song writing with Reed, during what was to be a really productive period for the band in the eighties.  Influential disc jockey John Peel was an enthusiastic supporter of ‘The Lorries’, and the band recorded 2 sessions for his programme.  These sessions are available on the triple CD compilation ‘See the Fire’.  The NME also produced an independent albums chart and the band’s debut album ‘Talk about the Weather’ reached No. 3.  Many Lorries’ fans consider this LP to be their best, although an excellent  second album released on Red Rhino called  ‘Paint your Wagon’ also reached No. 3 in the NME indie album chart.

After this, they negotiated a record deal with Situation Two, which was a subsidiary of Beggars Banquet, releasing two further LP’s ‘Nothing Wrong’ and ‘Blow’.  It must be said that these 2 releases didn’t have half the success of the previous ones, and the band was dropped by the label.  Feeling that the band had run its course, Reed disbanded it in 1991.  Following a twelve year hiatus, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry re-formed in 2003.  In 2005, The Lorries released ‘Thunder in the Black Cave’, which was a live DVD recorded in Belgium during their European Tour, and also, under the name of ‘The Chris Reed Unit’ an acoustic-based album ‘Minimal Animal’ was put together.

In the ensuing period, I didn’t hear much of them I’m sorry to report, despite journalist Mick Mercer writing in 2014 that “New material is on its way”.  Ten years on from this statement, new material WAS released and I’m delighted to report that the 2024 EP ‘Driving Black’ was put out by COP International as a prelude to the band’s new album ‘Strange kind of Paradise’.   I have requested Lex to play the track ‘Spinning Round’ from the ‘Paint your Wagon’ album which can be found here.  Like in all of my blogs, I could have chosen many a Red Lorry Yellow Lorry track, but this one just about shades it.  Gothic?  Post Punk?  Does it really matter?

After a lovely short break in Norfolk, and consequently a blog-free week last week, I make no apologies for successive pieces on bands who can only be described as “The Juggernauts” of electronic music. A couple of weeks ago it was the mighty Underworld and this week I am concentrating on Orbital, who I have followed since the band’s birth in 1989.  As in all band names, there’s generally a reason behind the name, and Orbital are no exception, having taken their name from the London Orbital Motorway, the M25, which went hand in hand with the early days of acid house.  Orbital consist of only two members – the brothers Hartnoll – Phil and Paul, who explained that the band was, in a nutshell, set up as “A low cost bedroom New Order / Severed Heads”.

The first piece I remember listening to was ‘Chime’ which was apparently recorded on the brothers’ father’s 4 track tape deck.  Not a lot of people know that this track became an anthem on the rave scene and earned them a ‘Top of the Pops’ appearance, having reached the dizzy heights of No. 17 in the UK Singles Chart.  I made a VHS recording of this, and noted that the brothers were wearing anti-Poll Tax tee shirts.  In 1992, the band recorded what was to be one of their most requested tunes,  ‘Halcyon’,  which was dedicated to their mother, who was sadly addicted to the tranquiliser ‘Halcion’ (Triazolam) for many years. Versions of this song played live by the band have incorporated ‘You give love a bad name’ by Bon Jovi, ‘Heaven is a place on Earth’ by Belinda Carlisle and ‘I believe in an thing called love’ by The Darkness.  The brothers’ popularity grew rapidly in the nineties, and they headlined at Glastonbury in 1994, with ‘Q’ magazine classing it as “One of the top 50 gigs of all time”.

When I blogged  about Underworld, I mentioned  that they had contributed to film scores.  Orbital did exactly the same, with ‘The Saint’, ‘Event Horizon’ and ‘Spawn’, plus in 1995 they would aid the ‘Mortal Kombat’ film in reaching Platinum selling status, with a remix of ‘Halcyon’.  After more success as the new Millennium dawned, the band later split up in 2004, after recording seven albums and making another Glastonbury appearance. They were very much liked by John Peel and recorded 2 sessions for his programme, in 1993 & 2004.  In November 2008, the brothers announced that they were re-forming to play a gig called “20 years after Chime” at The Big Chill Festival of 2009.  At the Glastonbury Festival of 2010, the eleventh Doctor Who, Matt Smith, joined Orbital on stage for their cover of the Doctor Who theme tune.  The brothers Hartnoll appeared at the Opening Ceremony of the London Paralympics in 2012, performing “Where is it going?”, after which the late Professor Stephen Hawking joined them on stage, delivering a speech on the Large Hadron Collider.

In 2014 there was a second break up of the band, who announced that they were “hanging up their iconic torch glasses and parting ways for the final time”. Phil then focused on DJ’ing, whilst Paul worked with Vince Clarke of Erasure, and also did soundtrack work for ‘Peaky Blinders’ and ‘American Ultra’.  I know you can sense that there is a second reunion coming, dear reader, and you are quite right.  In 2017 the band reunited and in 2018 released their ‘Monsters Exist’ album, with Professor Brian Cox featuring on the final track.  In 2022 the duo composed and recorded the soundtrack for the Netflix series ‘The Pentavaerate’, and in 2024 again appeared at Glastonbury, featuring special guests Tilda Swinton (vocals on Deeper) and Mel C (vocals on Spicy).  Throughout the band’s career they have contributed socio-political messages.  Paul Hartnoll summarised these by saying “ The Earth is still burning, and even today isn’t fixed. Governments are still fucking idiots. I’m not saying I could do any better, but they could.  With our music we’re saying “Go on then, sort it out!”

I am asking Lex to play is ‘Ringa Ringa (The old pandemic folk song)’ from the 2024 album ‘Optical Delusions’.

As a lover of good electronic music, I feel I must talk about Underworld, who in a fairly long and varied musical career, have become a favourite.  I can hardly believe that they were formed in Cardiff as long ago as 1987 as a twosome project of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith.  These two were initially joined by Alfie Thomas, Bryn Burrows and Baz Allen.  When I first listened to them, they were one of many bands offering funk & synth pop, but as the nineties dawned, they took a slight turn towards dance & techno.  It is with this genre of music, that Underworld have been influential to a number of artists, and have also diversified into writing film soundtracks/scores, televisual material, plus amazingly they wrote some music for the London Olympics of 2012.  Disbanding in 1990, due to a variety of reasons which I won’t go into in order to save space, Hyde and Smith recruited Darren Emerson, forming, in effect, ‘Underworld Mark 2’.  Hyde had been the lead singer in ‘Underworld Mark 1’, but in the new set up. the three concentrated on a kind of rock-techno fusion, and eliminated the pop element from their work.

The band’s second album ‘Second toughest in the Infants’ achieved a certain amount of commercial success, in that a couple of tracks were featured in the film ‘Trainspotting’.  ‘Born Slippy’ is one of Underworld’s best known tunes , and is widely acclaimed as being one of the greatest dance tracks of the nineties, if not of all time.  Sadly Emerson left the band in 2000 to concentrate on projects of his own, leaving Hyde and Smith to continue as a duo.  They released a new album called ‘Everything, Everything’ and the release met general approval, and its general sound seemed quite similar to when Emerson was a member of the band.   Whilst touring in 2005, Hyde and Smith were joined by Darren Price, a respected DJ who had remixed for the band in the past, and Underworld released an ambitious 3 CD set ‘Live in Tokyo’, which was sold after their Japanese tour and later online.  Following this, they released a series of other new live material in a series called ‘Riverrun’.  Price would stay with the band until 2016.

In 2004, the band contributed to the BBC celebration of John Peel’s life ‘Keeping it Peel’, providing a DJ set for the programme’s broadcast on 16 December 2004.  They clearly thought a lot of the iconic & influential disc jockey, who had championed their music and arranged 2 sessions in 2003 & 2004.  In 2006 they teamed up with Gabriel Yared to compose the score to the Anthony Minghella film ‘Breaking and Entering’.  Not a lot of people know that, in 2007, Underworld were forced to cancel their set at a festival in Athens, when Greek anarchists stormed the stadium while the Beastie Boys were performing. Rick was injured in the violence that followed and was taken to hospital for treatment.  Two years later, history all but repeated itself (this time without injury, thankfully) when audience members climbed down rows of seats  and onto the main floor of the Los Angeles Forum, causing abandonment on safety grounds.

With almost a year to go before the 2012 London Olympics, Underworld were chosen to direct the music for the Opening Ceremony, with Ceremony Director, Danny Boyle.  The band also contributed two tracks of their own ‘And I will Kiss’ & ‘Caliban’s Dream’, and for their contribution to the Games they won the Q Award for Innovation in Sound.  Talking of Awards, Underworld won a Grammy Award nomination for their 2016 LP ‘Barbara, Barbara, we face a shining future’  The band have seen so much success in their history, that this short blog cannot possibly mention or discuss its entirety,  They continue to have their fingers in many pies, with composing, performing, entering new projects and generally experimenting,  Their new album ‘ Strawberry Hotel’ is due for release on 25 October 2024, and having heard a sneak preview of some tracks, I can assure you, it’s good.   As in all of my blogs, I could have asked Lex to play loads of excellent Underworld tracks, but the one I have requested this week  is ‘Moon in Water’ from the ‘Barking’ LP.

The Delgados are a Scottish indie rock band.  Most media people say they are from Glasgow, but as far as I know, they’re actually from Motherwell, which is near Glasgow! They are Alan Woodward (guitars & vocals), Emma Pollock (guitars & vocals), Stewart Henderson (bass), and Paul Savage (drums), and formed in 1994.  The band seem to have a thing about cycling, and named themselves after Pedro Delgado, a Spanish former professional cyclist, who won the Tour de France in 1988.  Unusually, the band didn’t sign for a Record Company – they formed their own, which is Chemikal Underground Records (not a lot of people know that).  Notable bands who also signed to this label were Mogwai and Arab Strap.  The Delgados’ first single on the label was ‘Monica Webster” / ‘Brand new car’, which John Peel liked, and the band were always one of his favourites.  He asked them to do a session, but they ended up recording seven, all of which are on the 2006 released ‘Complete Peel Sessions’ LP.

Unfortunately, the Chemikal Underground Label, like many others, became cash-strapped, and the band couldn’t afford at this stage to release a second single on it – instead they used Radar Records.  The group however, juggled work at the Label with several tours and I’m pleased to say that four of their five studio albums were released on Chemikal Underground.  The first one was released in 1996 and called ‘Domestiques’ and the second in 1998 called ‘Peloton’ – both cycling references – and the latter gave the Delgados not only their first commercial single success, but also No. 1 in Peel’s Festive 50.  The track concerned was ‘Pull the wires from the Wall’, which was excellent in my opinion, but has always reminded me of a similar tune that I can never remember the  title of.  Answers on a postcard to Lex please, and by the way, this record would also make the Festive Fifty all time Chart in 2000.

The Delgados released subsequent albums ‘The Great Eastern’, ‘Hate’(on Mantra Records), and ‘Universal Audio’, and also had a single from ‘The Great Eastern’ nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, which was called ‘American Trilogy’.   Incidentally, many people confuse the once-named Great Eastern Hotel near Liverpool Street Station in London, with the one whose picture is featured on the sleeve of the Delgados’ third album.  This is now The Great Eastern hostel for the homeless in Glasgow, having formerly been a textile mill, and this is the one that the Delgados were referring to.

The band announced that they were splitting up in the Spring of 2005, with Stewart Henderson, on his departure saying “It’s difficult to pour so much of my energy and time into something that never seemed to quite get the attention I felt it deserved”.  The group still continued to run Chemikal Underground, and by this time Pollock & Savage had married.  Ironically, during the band’s hiatus, a track called ‘I fought the Angels’ from the ‘Universal Audio’ LP was used in the production of Golden Globe Award winning medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in 2006.  Now, you know that I am always suspicious of bands re-forming, but I am pleased to report that after deciding to end their hiatus in 2022, the Delgados planned a tour of five tour dates in 2023, with the last gig being in Glasgow. They still sound pretty darned good to me, and for the track I have requested Lex to play this week, I have chosen  ‘Pull the wires from the Wall’ from the ‘Peloton’ album, which can be found here.

Camera Obscura are an indie band from Glasgow, like Belle & Sebastian who I recently blogged about. Their roots go back to 1996, and was formed by Tracyanne Campbell, John Henderson & Gavin Dunbar.  David Skirving later joined as permanent guitarist.  Their music has often been compared to Belle & Sebastian, and fairly or unfairly referred to as “twee pop”.  I don’t know who said this but they have been praised for their “honest, wide and adult approach to heartbreak, romantic liaisons and escapism”.  An extremely accurate statement in my opinion.  They have made six studio albums to date, eighteen singles, and recorded five sessions for John Peel,  plus a couple of ‘one-off’ EP/LP compilations for Record Store Day – ‘The 4AD Sessions EP’ in 2014, and ‘Making Money’ in 2022.

Their first album ‘Biggest Bluest Hi Fi’ was released as long ago as 2001, and ironically produced by Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian. By this time Carey Lander had joined as a keyboard player. In February 2009, the band signed with 4AD Records of London, and almost immediately released their fourth album ‘My Maudlin Career’.  This LP gave the group their first ever top 40 UK success, and it also reached the U.S.Billboard 200 and the top 40 in the Republic of Ireland.  Again in the year 2009, Camera Obscura released a special edition single for Record Store Day entitled ‘French Navy’.  You know what I’m going to say next......Not a lot of people know......that ‘French Navy’ was also used by Echo Falls, who are none other than the sponsors of well known cookery programme ‘Come Dine with Me’, at the start of each episode and during advert breaks.

The band enjoyed a good next part of their career with 4AD as their record company, until 2011 when Carey Lander fell ill with osteosarcoma, which is an aggressive type of bone cancer.  She responded well to treatment at first, but by 2015 the illness had returned and Camera Obscura cancelled planned gigs in the U.S.  Lander set up a ‘Just Giving’ page for research into the illness, but sadly passed away on 11 October 2015.  As of August 2024, the sum of donations is £103,000.  An understandable hiatus for the band followed.  In 2018 Tracyanne and a guy called Danny Coughlan made an album ‘Tracyanne & Danny’, from which they released ‘Alabama’ which is a moving tribute to Lander.

In the Summer of 2018, Camera Obscura re-formed and participated in a warm-up show at St Luke’s & The Winged Ox in Glasgow, with proceeds going to the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in memory of Carey Lander.  The band took a difficult decision and brought in a replacement keyboard player, Donna Maciocia of Amplifico, who also provided backing vocals.  In 2020, the group’s preparation of a new album had to be put on hold, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, but in May 2024 a new album was released ‘Look to the East, Look to the West’.  This is their first studio LP since 2013 and has received wide praise.

I have always admired Camera Obscura’s determination and their will to succeed.  They have overcome many an adversity, their music is so under-rated, their lyrics are magnificent and I hope you like the track I have asked Lex to play.  It is ‘Swans’ from the ‘My Maudlin Career’ album, which can be found here.  I’ve chosen it because not only is it a great track, but because Carey’s excellent keyboard playing can be heard prominently.

I don’t quite know why it is, but Ladytron seem to be one of the least known electronic rock bands.  I say this because apart from making excellent records, their members have also been involved in providing music for various media activities, such as video games, TV series,  film scores and commercial advertising.  They have also produced remixes for various artists such as Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode, Erasure, Goldfrapp, Blondie, Christina Aguilera and Nine Inch Nails.  They formed as long ago as 1999, in Liverpool and currently consist of Helen Marnie (lead vocals and synthesizers), Mira Aroyo, who is Bulgarian-Israeli (vocals and synthesizers), and Daniel Hunt (synthesizers, guitar, vocals).   Reuben Wu (synthesizers) helped form the group in 1999, but left in 2023.  They have released seven studio albums, from their first one in 2001 called simply ‘604’, – which I’m sure you all know, is the Area Code for British Columbia -  to their latest, in 2023, ‘Time’s Arrow’.  Like many others, they have also made a live album ‘Live at London Astoria 16.07.08’ and also the compilation LP ‘Best of 00-10’.

Ladytron took their band name from a track on Roxy Music’s debut album of 1972.  Ex Roxy member Brian Eno, said in 2009 “Ladytron are, for me, the best of English pop music.  They’re the kind of band that really only appears in England, with this funny mixture of art-school dicking around and dressing up, with a full awareness of what’s happening everywhere musically - which is kind of knitted together and woven into something quite new”.  I said earlier that Ladytron are labelled as an electronic rock band, but they are also known as synth-pop, electronic pop, post-punk, and new wave.  Just to add a bit of further mystery to the band’s work, some songs contain lyrics written by Mira Aroyo in her native Bulgarian.

Daniel Hunt founded the record label Invicta Hi-Fi, and in addition, a Night Club.  Wu, Marnie & Aroyo all had academic backgrounds.  Wu trained in Industrial Design at Sheffield Hallam University, and graduated in 1997.  Marnie studied music at Liverpool University where she attained a B.A., and Aroyo became a postgraduate research geneticist in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Oxford.  Apart from recording two Peel Sessions, Ladytron have appeared at many festivals , such as Festival Internacional de Benicassim in Spain, La Route du Rock in France, and the Reading Festival in the U.K.  The band have toured North & South America, Europe, Asia and Australia.  “We know that” I hear you say, BUT....not a lot of people know that Franz Ferdinand once opened for Ladytron.  I lie not.  However, on the flip side of that, Ladytron have opened for Bjork, Goldfrapp and Nine Inch Nails.  Another amazing fact is that during the tour to promote their third LP ‘Witching Hour’ in 2005, the group used to name their four synthesizers so that they could easily differentiate them : CLEOPATRA (Marnie), BABYLON (Aroyo), ULYSSES (Hunt) and GLORIA (Wu).

Well, that’s a whistle-stop tour of Ladytron, and in my opinion they remain one of the most under-rated bands this Country has produced. Sad that founder member Reuben Wu announced, just after the release of Ladytron’s 2023 album, that he was to leave the band due to the ongoing commitments of his Art & photography career in the U.S.  Whilst on the subject of the ‘Time’s Arrow’ LP, the track that I have requested Lex to play is ‘Faces’ which can be found here.

I seem to remember saying some time ago that I enjoy techno music.  I love the sheer energy and skill of producing it.   There are many, many DJs but Charlotte de Witte, I would definitely say is “at the top of her game” as far as DJing goes.  She is a 32 year old Belgian DJ and record producer, best known for her dark and stripped back brand of acid-techno.  She is also the founder of the music labels KNTXT and Époque.  First though a little history plus the evolution of the DJ.  He or she used to play a selection of vinyl records on a turntable, at entertainment venues and over the radio.  This inevitably progressed via cassettes and CDs to today’s modern digital computer technology, and DJing software like Serato & Traktor are in common use.   The DJ became involved in mixing and remixing tracks, using equipment that can play at least two sources of recorded music simultaneously.  In most cases modern DJs have become so involved that they can now appear in their own right at venues – the likes of Charlotte, Deborah de Luca, Carl Cox, David Guetta, Amelie Lens regularly pack thousands of adoring, dancing fans into their gigs which usually last much longer say than the average band performance.  Festivals like Ultra Miami, Lollapalooza, Coachella and Tomorrowlands are hugely popular to live audiences and to video platforms like You Tube.

Well that’s a brief history, and possibly the only time in my own life that I wish I had been born  LATER in the twentieth century, was when I heard that Charlotte de Witte around 2009 had started to explore Ghent’s underground night scene and found herself totally obsessed with electronic and techno music. Wow!  Perhaps a little scary but what a career path to take.  I have another amazing fact to tell you about now, and you won’t be surprised to know that “Not a lot of people know that”........  De Witte, when breaking into DJing, called herself Raving George to try and avoid prejudice against female DJs, and released her debut EP in 2013 under that name.

A couple of years later, she dispensed with the alias of Raving George and started using her real name.  Apparently she recalls a set played by by German DJ Len Faki, at a festival and adopted his style to a style similar to her current one. She later released an EP called ‘Weltschmerz’ on Turbo Recordings.  In 2017 / 18, de Witte released seven EP’s, and performed at such notable electronic music events  as the London Printworks, Boiler Room, and Junction 2 Festival.  Just before the end of the decade, she launched her own record label KNTXT, and well known musicians like Chris Liebing and Monoloc released music on that label.  In that year of 2019, she gained the prestigious DJ Awards ‘Best Techno DJ’ accolade, and since then, following further successes,  has advanced to becoming true to her nickname ‘Techno Queen’.

I rarely touch on personal lives, but it is a fact that in 2021, Charlotte became engaged to another techno DJ, Enrico Sangiuliano who hails from Italy.  The pair released their iconic remixed version of 1990’s Belgian tune ‘The Age of Love’, which became hugely popular, gaining Gold Record status.  The couple married in 2022.  The biggest problem I’ve had in respect of finding a track for Lex to play is the sheer length of most of Charlotte’s recorded work, but if Lex doesn’t mind, this selection is a radio edit, just over four and a half minutes’ long.  It is the track just referred to and this remix was recorded live at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami in 2023. Being an edited remix, it ends rather abruptly, so may require our DJ to demonstrate his tech skills in ‘fading’ the track.  If you ever get the chance to see Charlotte de Witte – please take it – there really is no DJ to match her on the planet IMO, and she really is the Queen of Techno.  ‘The Age of Love’ can be found here.

First, many thanks to Lex for letting me choose the material for last week’s playlist – I hope you enjoyed my selection.  Second, I am resuming blogging this week with emphasis on a solo American singer/songwriter that I greatly admire – Cat Power.  You won’t be at all surprised that this is her stage name rather than her real name, and she was born as Charlyn Marie Marshall in Atlanta, Georgia, although nowadays she is known as Chan (pronounced Shawn) Marshall or Cat Power.  Her voice is fairly deep and husky, and over her 12 albums, many people have noticed the constant evolution of her songs, with a mix of blues, folk, soul and even punk.  ‘L.A. Weekly’  found most of her songs rather melancholy, and described her as “The Queen of Sadcore” -  a label that Cat Power herself disputed.  As a teenager she listened to The Smiths, Siouxsie & the Banshees, and The Cure, plus her stepfather’s record collection which included Otis Redding, Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Rolling Stones.  Perhaps a major event in her career was in 1996, when she signed for Matador Records, whom she was with for 22 years.

She made 3 sessions for John Peel, with one recorded at ‘Peel Acres’ on 18 June 2000 – this became famous in that she belted out 11 cover versions of tunes, including Dylan’s ‘Hard times in New York Town’ and Oasis’s ‘Wonderwall’.  To complement the original material that she was writing, she made the 2000 LP  ‘The Covers Album’.  Matador released this, but the contract for it allegedly consisted of a Post It note signed by herself and the founder of the Record Company. After a flirtation with the fashion industry, who liked her ‘neo grunge’ look, there was a hiatus until 2003, when Chan released her first album of original material in five years called ‘You are Free’.

In January 2006, Cat Power released, to great acclaim, her seventh album ‘The Greatest’ . This was a Southern soul-influenced LP of new material, augmented by several Memphis studio musicians, and unlike her previous work, gained mainstream success, making its debut in the Billboard chart at No. 34.  ‘The Greatest’ won her the ‘Shortlist Music Prize’ making Chan Marshall the first woman to win this honour. To continue my ‘Not a lot of people know that’ series that you all know and love, Chan became a celebrity spokesperson for a new line of jewellery from World famous fashion & perfume company Chanel.  Apparently Karl Lagerfeld had seen her smoking a cigarette outside the Mercer Hotel in New York, and chose her for the soundtrack to his Spring 2007 fashion show.

In 2008, Cat Power formed her own band called the Dirty Delta Blues Band, and her iconic ‘Song to Bobby’ (tribute to Bob Dylan) appeared on the ‘Juke box’ album.  During the same year, Chan and her band recorded their version of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ for a Lincoln car commercial.  Fast forward to 2012, and Cat Power released her most successful album to date called ‘Sun’, featuring her newly written material, and this received a media review of “a unique album, and worthy of a four star rating”.  Journalist Sarah Grant referred to it as “a passionate album of electronic music filtered through a singer-songwriter’s soul”.  I’m not a chart person as you know, but it is a fact that the LP debuted at No 10 in the Billboard chart.  In 2023 Marshall released her first live album, called ‘Cat Power sings Bob Dylan; The 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert’ and this year embarked upon a tour in support of the record.

So, that’s a whirlwind tour of Cat Power – broadly speaking, she and my favourite British female artiste PJ Harvey share similar traits, in that they are constantly changing and evolving.  I hope you like the track I have requested Lex to play, ‘Cross Bones Style‘ from the ‘Moon Pix’ album, which can be found here.

Kanda Bongo Man (the person) was actually born Bongo Kanda, in Inongo, Belgian Congo – now Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1955 (blimey, he’s nearly as old as Lex and me!) and is perhaps the most famous of all soukous musicians. He actually became the singer for Orchestra Belle Mambo in 1973, but his solo career only took off in 1979 after he moved to Paris.  I mentioned him in my blog of 3 December last year when I talked about African music as a whole, and raved about a former guitarist of his, the great Diblo Dibala, who is arguably the greatest guitarist of the soukous genre.

Kanda Bongo Man (the band) has always been superbly led by KBM himself, who has played guitar and been the vocalist.  The previous approach was to have one guitar solo at the end of several verses of the song.  He turned out to be revolutionary, by implementing guitar solos after every verse, and even the occasional guitar solo BEFORE the first verse.  This gave birth to the Kwassa Kwassa dance rhythm – this is where the hips go back and forth, while the hands move to follow the hips, if that makes sense.  I see it now, as a veteran lover of Kwassa Kwassa, but I concede I didn’t just a few short years ago.  As I said, Kanda Bongo Man has been a leader of many musicians in his long career, most notably Diblo, who although a really vital cog in KBM’s well oiled machine, moved on to begin his own successful solo career.  Kanda Bongo Man still tours both in Western Europe, Scandinavia and North America.  Locally for Lex there was an appearance in 2005 at the ‘LIVE 8:Africa calling concert’ in Cornwall, and locally for me, KBM performed at the Shrewsbury Folk Festival in 2022.

Discography-wise, Kanda Bongo Man have made 20 albums, from ‘Iyole’ in 1981 to ‘Lekette Bue’ in 2022,  and they have been recorded live on countless occasions, which e.g. You Tube & Spotify have for your delight on their channels.  You will not be at all surprised when I say that in the Eighties, John Peel & Andy Kershaw championed the music of Kanda Bongo Man and were key figures in introducing what was then generalised as ‘World Music’ to the mainstream.  KBM did 2 session for John’s Show, in 1993 and 2003.  I remember at the Glastonbury Festival in 2003, John’s co-host Jo Whiley (who had a terrific respect for Peel), couldn’t understand why he had sloped off one day – the reason was quickly unearthed when the cameras panned in on him dancing away on the hill, enjoying Kanda Bongo Man’s live set.......amazing because the great man rarely danced!

To summarise, most people, including myself, find this type of music incredibly joyous.  When you watch a soukous video the happiness leaps out at you and the skilled musicians all seem to be immensely enjoying themselves.  I mentioned to you that I had ventured down on the New York Underground to Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, to seek out ‘Kwassa Kwassa’ CD’s.  Nowadays that area of Lower Manhattan mainly houses night clubs, record shops and indie boutiques,  but back in the day was known as true American Bohemia.  At the risk of sounding repetitious, I could choose enough music here to occupy the whole of Lex’s show, but in choosing one song, I have decided that the live recording made for the Kora Awards in Sun City of ‘Bili’ is perfect for a Friday night (or any night).  This features Kanda Bongo Man himself on vocals, and Faya Tess, who after her ‘Keba’ album was voted the best singer in Central Africa.  The track can be found here.

Surprisingly enough, the Detroit Cobras are from Detroit, Michigan, and were formed in 1994.  They are a garage band, whose original line up was Steve Shaw on guitar, Mary Ramirez on guitar, Jeff Meier on bass, Vic Hill on drums and the late Rachel Nagy on vocals, and this band signed up to Sympathy for the Record Industry Records, releasing their first album ‘Mink, Rat or Rabbit’ in 1998.  After what seemed one hell of a gap, three years later they released  their second LP ‘ Life, Love and Leaving’ .  Unlike most of the bands I have featured in this blog, the band mainly chose to do cover versions of records from the 1950’s & 1960’s, and you may remember that when Jack White collaborated with thirteen Michigan-based bands to form his ‘Jack White’s Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit’ compilation album, the Cobras contribution was a cover of Otis Redding’s ‘Shout Bamalama’.  Needless to say, Peely championed them.

The iconic London-based Rough Trade Records signed the band, ever mindful that their retro-garage rock sound was very popular in the United Kingdom.  An E.P. ‘Seven Easy Pieces’ was released in 2003 and a year later came their third LP ‘Baby’ – this album went against usual Cobras’ protocol, in that it included one original song, ‘Hot Dog (Watch me eat)’.  This album became unusual in that the U.S Record Label Bloodshot tagged the tunes on ‘Seven Easy Pieces’ onto ‘Baby’.  The same Record Company released the band’s fourth album ‘Tied & True’ in 2007 – for all of you F1 fans, this was the year that the great and the humorous Kimi Raikonnen won his sole drivers’ World Championship.

The band became infamous for constantly changing their line-up, although their classic rock guitar sound always featured Ramirez.  The Detroit Cobras spent much of 2008 touring, and in 2009 headlined a tour with the Dex Romweber Duo supporting them.  I lost track of them in the immediately succeeding years, although I gather that they still played gigs, usually in their home territory of Detroit.  In 2014 they toured the Midwest and then the West Coast of the U.S.  In 2018 they broke with tradition, playing a couple of festivals in Germany and Spain, and the following year did an extended European Tour.  You won’t be at all surprised to learn that a 2020 tour was cancelled because of the Covid 19 Pandemic.  A 2022 tour was also cancelled in January due to the sudden death in New Orleans of co-founder member Rachel Nagy, who was just 48 years old.  It was such a sad loss, as Nagy was a captivating performer known for her magnetic voice and unbelievably strong personality.  The band put on a Rachel Nagy celebration show in August 2022, which was held in Detroit and the format of this show was so successful that the band reunited to repeat it at many West Coast venues.

The current line-up of the Detroit Cobras is Marcus Durant on lead vocals, Steve Nawara on guitar, Dale Wilson on bass, Kenny Tudrick on drums, and as they say “last, but by no means least” original co-founder Mary Ramirez on guitar. (Mary’s a.k.a. is Mary Cobra, fittingly).  To underline me bringing to your attention the constant changing of personnel within the band, no less than 31 members supplementary to the current line-up have played in some form for the Detroit Cobras.

I’ve referred to the LP’s & EP’s released by the band, and they also released nine singles between 1996 and 2018.  In addition, Munster Records have released an LP, CD and vinyl 7” single box set entitled ‘The Original Recordings (Singles and Unreleased 1995-97)’ as a compilation.  Like I have intimated in previous blogs, as a fan of many years, I am spoilt for choice when just making a request to Lex for just a single track......but I am going to choose (in dedication to Rachel) the Otis Redding penned ‘Shout Bamalama’ from the ‘Life, Love & Leaving’ album, which can be found here.
