A New Year has dawned and I hope you all enjoyed the Festive Season. I look forward to listening to WTF is this in 2024 and to telling you more about some of the alternative bands & people who have impressed me over the years. I’ve always believed that there is a whole world of music out there waiting to be listened to, and that ‘TOTP’, plus many so called music radio stations are not really that representative of the stuff that people enjoy. A great example of this, is my recent blog focus on the great British band Bob. If their superb single 'Convenience' had been on say Radio One’s playlist, and had been embraced & promoted by the media, it would surely have gained its true accolade of ‘a perfect pop record’, just as ‘Teenage Kicks’ by the Undertones quite rightly did some years before (well done Peely as always for your persistence in promoting this masterpiece)........ well, that’s just my opinion, which you can take or leave – the majority of you are probably leaving this very minute!

This leads me nicely onto a band that was one of the best bands that never quite made it. I refer to the Would Be’s from Northern Ireland, who Peel really championed in 1990 and beyond. The band was set up by the Finnegan brothers in 1989 and at the time the group’s average age was around seventeen. Astonishingly Paul Finnegan was only 13 at the Would Be’s conception. The band sent a copy of of their first single ‘I’m hardly ever wrong’ on Decoy records to J.P, bearing in mind that they had had only 250 pressings done. At this time, many Indie bands did similar, in the hope that the great man would have time to listen to them and give them some air time on his radio programme. To cut a long story short, Peely loved the record and even played it on his BBC World Service programme, in addition to his regular slot on Radio 1. Very soon after they recorded a session for the Peel Show, and it was then that the A & R people, always scouting for hot property, came to sign them. They were persistent in that they apparently contacted the schools that vocalist Julie McDonnell & trombonist/saxophonist & violinist Aideen O’Reilly attended for information.

Against all odds, the band chose the small Decoy label, but unfortunately this company had no money to spend on an album, which would have arguably been the icing on the cake for such a  talented bunch. Julie McDonnell returned to her studies and was replaced by Eileen Cogan, but the writing was on the wall for a band without sound financial backing. After recording their third E.P. the Would Be’s split in 1991, without a debut album and its proceeds to fall back on.

A short-lived reunion happened in the Millennium year, and then a more successful one in 2012, when the original line up got back together, minus drummer Pascal Smith. In 2013 they FINALLY released their much awaited debut L.P. ‘Beautiful Mess’.

On the Peel Session broadcast in 1990, the band performed 4 songs : ‘All this rubbish is true’ / ‘Must it be’ / ‘Funny ha ha’ / ‘My radio sounds different in the dark’, which is the track I have requested lex to play this coming Friday,  or the original Decoy track

In conclusion, the track I have requested, is arguably  a near as dammit a ‘perfect pop record’......just like the Undertones ‘Teenage Kicks’ and Bob’s ‘Convenience’. The title of the track always reminds me of growing up in the 1950’s, listening in the dark to Radio Luxembourg on my radio at low volume, which was concealed beneath the bed clothes. In hindsight, I’m sure my parents knew that I was listening. Happy days.

29th December 2023

Coming up this Friday 22 December 2023, is the WTF is This Christmas Show, so I am combining this blog with a little bit on Half Man Half Biscuit, and then submitting some Christmas-y alternative Festive tunes for lex to approve, and hopefully for you to enjoy (the reality is that you’ll probably be opining “He’s finally lost it”)

Half Man Half Biscuit were formed in 1984 ......in I like to say Cheshire......but Birkenhead is probably classified as part of Liverpool now, I know not. It’s The Wirral to most people.  Anyway, I have always loved their satirical, sarcastic, sometimes cynical style. The core of the band were, and still are Nigel Blackwell and Neil Crossley. At the time, Nigel did admit to having what many would describe as an alternative lifestyle, but according to him , he was still “robbing cars and playing football like normal people do”

They’ve made 13 LP’s/EP’s (excluding compilations), and all of these, in my opinion have great titles, particularly the excellent 2000 album “Trouble over Bridgwater”.  From their debut LP “Back in the DHSS”, they released a single “The Trumpton Riots” which amazingly topped the Indie  Singles Chart in 1986, and even more amazingly, their second single “Dickie Davies Eyes” did the same. The band then spilt for a sabbatical of four years, before appearing at the Reading Festival in 1990. They did no less than TWELVE sessions for the John Peel Show, and John enthusiastically praised them and played many of their tracks before his death in 2004.  One astonishing fact that has emerged, is that they turned down a chance to appear on Channel 4 TV's “The Tube” because Nigel’s favourite football team Tranmere Rovers were playing on that particular night!

The band have occasionally been augmented by a lady called Victoria Loop, who has played bass, tenor horn & cornet, and she is known as “The Fifth Biscuit”, which I believe is a parallel reference to Billy Preston always being referred to as “The Fifth Beatle”.  Blackwell has always demonstrated his love of television, and the smaller British towns in his writing, and also his distaste of many trends such as he referred to in a track that lex has played before...... “Paintball’s coming home” from the album “Voyage to the Bottom of the Road”.  All in all, I think it’s fair to say that  Peel adored the band, and Nigel Blackwell, like The Fall’s (the late)  Mark E. Smith, was always labelled “a genius” by many, many people from their fan base and from the media.   Perhaps fellow musician Eliza Carthy O.B.E. was spot on when she championed the band for their “pathos disguised with wit and sarcasm”, and also the cricket commentator that we never seem to hear from these days – David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd – often made reference to HMHB’s lyrics, which went completely “over the heads” of his co-commentators!  Incidentally, I’ll be writing more about the mighty Fall next year.

My three Christmas requests to lex are HMHB ‘s “All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit”, “It’s clichéd to be cynical at Christmas” and The Fall’s “Hark the Herald Angels sing”. I hope you enjoy them, and please seek out the discography of these 2 brilliant bands.   Enjoy Christmas and ATB for a good ‘24.

Can I thank lex and UKNR for all of the positive comments I have received about my love and (limited) knowledge of African music and in particular soukous. It is a musical genre that I greatly love, and its own brand of joyousness makes it  - for me at least – absolutely timeless & ageless.  lex has also said that he likes the sounds of soukous, so perhaps he’ll play more in the weeks to come.

At the risk of being labelled an old nostalgist (is there such a word?), I am this week concentrating on a band formed in 1964 in New York City, who were there way before most modern alternative/underground/progressive rock was formed and surely must have been one of the first true ‘underground’ bands. I refer to The Velvet Underground, and their original line up was Lou Reed, guitar & vocals; Welshman John Cale who played a plethora of instruments; Sterling Morrison, guitar; and Angus MacLise, drums (he was replaced by Moe Tucker quite early on, in 1965). One could argue that their avant garde style, musical experiments and controversial songs were instrumental in the birth of punk rock and many other musical genres.

In 1966, no less a person than Andy Warhol became their manager, and bizarrely they served as his house band! Perhaps their most iconic album The Velvet Underground and Nico was released on Verve Records in March 1967. I use the word iconic, because despite initial poor sales and much of the music press dismissing it, it later drew itself incredible acclaim, in part due its VERY alternative music and in part because of  its striking sleeve, which depicted a banana, painted by Andy Warhol. For this LP, the German singer, actress and model Nico was selected to perform and as well as being noticeably tall, she had a deep, rather ‘deadpan’ voice, which many thought complemented the band well, especially in live performances. I have chosen All Tomorrow’s Parties from this album........a near Gothic anthem, in my opinion.  The Beatles Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts’ Club Band was released just after, and some say halted the progress of The Velvet Underground and Nico.

They released three more albums White Light/White Heat (1968); The Velvet Underground (1969); Loaded (1970) before disbanding in the early 70’s. All of the members appeared on their former colleagues’ later solo albums, and I reckon that the Lou Reed Transformer LP (1972) had, and still does have the most acclaim.

Nico moved on after the band parted company with Andy Warhol. Apparently Warhol told Reed to “think about” where he wanted to go.....did he want to carry on playing at Art Festivals & Museums or move into other areas? Reed replied that he would think about it, and promptly fired him!  Cale & Reed also clashed and the former also left, making way for Doug Yule from Boston based Glass Menagerie in 1969. Yule’s inclusion in the band made for a much gentler third album which seemed more influenced by folk music, and this suited Lou Reed’s desire to put singing at the forefront, rather than the loud & abrasive ‘Vox’ musical influence of the first two LP’s.

By 1970 a disillusioned Reed had had enough, apparently stating that the band was failing to make progress. People in the industry cited that his drug dependency was clouding his vision. Sad to report that Sterling Morrison died in 1995 & Reed in 2012 after a brief reformation of the V.U. in 1972 involving himself, Cale & Nico, and some years on and off the road as a solo artist.  John Cale O.B.E. is still alive age 81 and Moe Tucker is 79.

As for Nico, it was sad to see such a talented artist have a fifteen year addiction to drugs. She was born Christa Paffgen in Cologne in 1938, modelled extensively, appeared in many films, and apparently took ages in her dressing room to prepare.  Plus she also had a pre-performance habit of burning a candle in its entirety, much to the irritation of Lou Reed & John Cale!   Ironically she met her death in 1988 whilst cycling in Ibiza. She came off her bike,  hit her head, and died from a cerebral haemorrhage – ironically when she was on a methadone replacement treatment for heroin addiction. Her Gothic style of music seemingly inspired many musicians such as Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure and Bjork.

You will hopefully appreciate that the above is merely a brief summary of the Velvet Underground’s career. I could go on writing for hours about such Colossuses, but lex would probably tell me off! What comes shining through however, is that they, as early pioneers, set the scene for many, many others to follow. They were there at the beginning, and their music, quite rightly lives on. It never seems to age. Their music was influential, and as more & more people have appreciated their work,  their records have become more popular as the years have rolled on.  I feel blessed to have followed them and enjoyed their immense contribution to (as Andrew Loog Oldham ‘s Immediate Records used to say) “The Industry of Human Happiness”.

I’d like to thank fans of lexWTF is this for their positive feedback to the two blogs I have written so far. I thought last Friday’s show (1 Dec) was excellent and I was pleased that my choice of a Paris Angels’ track went down well.
This week I’m moving onto another love of mine – music from the African Continent. Now, I know that this genre is not really anything new, so I have concentrated on the involvement & sheer joy I experienced by this music, since I discovered it in the mid eighties. As most of you know, I was a John Peel Show fanatic, and John, plus his then Radio One colleague Andy Kershaw championed people and bands from Africa that I’d never heard of. Please also bear in mind, that as the sixties drew to a close, despite the appeal of African music, it was difficult to project, compared with say Anglo-American music.
Rightly or wrongly, it became grouped under the title of World Music – this incorporated Asian influenced artists such as Quintessence, The Incredible String Band and The Third Ear Band, plus the likes of e.g. established musicians like Ravi Shankar and Imrat Khan.
Punk (which I loved) and its localism  arguably helped close the hippy trail, and this was seemingly not helped by the Iran revolution, the war in Afghanistan, and the ongoing occupation of Tibet by China. World Music became rare, even on the John Peel Show.
A new breed of World Music underwent a resurgence, IRONICALLY on the Peel Show in the 1980’s, and I am using the term again making no apologies for such...... IRONICALLY, on the African continent, many  people had formed a love of newer music very similar in broad terms to the way many British, Americans and Europeans had embraced punk. Peel & Kershaw played an abundance of post-independence Zimbabwean music, featuring bands like the Bhundu Boys, John Chibadura & the Tembo Brothers, and The Four Brothers, who famously played a live set on Peel’s lawn in 1989. His wife Sheila (“The Pig”) had secretly arranged this as part of the great man’s 50th birthday celebrations that year. Indeed the Four Brothers did 4 Peel sessions. Andy Kershaw described the moment when Peel and him first heard the Bhundu Boys, by referring to it as “a dazzling quality of the music, the harmonies, and the sparkling guitar playing”
The emergence of the Soukous genre of World Music seemed to be a tonic to the ears of many music lovers, Worldwide. This was actually dance music, with searing guitars, and apparently originated form Zaire, (since re-named The Democratic Republic of Congo). In my opinion, the greatest and most exciting soukous guitarist was a Congolese guy by the name of Diblo Dibala, who was known as The Machine Gun because of his amazing speed and skill while playing his guitar.
Like myself, he’s not young, and was born in 1954 in Kisangani, moving to Kinshasa in his childhood. In 1979 he decided to join the European scene moving to Brussels, and two years later joined Kanda Bongo Man in Paris, gaining instant success. He was regularly sought after as a session musician, and worked  with the excellent Pepe Kalle. By the mid eighties, Diblo had formed his own soukous band Loketo, with two superb singers Aurlus Mabele and Mav Cacharel. In 1990, he started a new soukous band called Matchatcha, and as far as I am aware, even at the grand old age of 69, (Yes, I know the Rolling Stones and others are older!) he’s still a part of them.
When in N.Y.C.in 2004, I managed to buy 2 Kanda Bongo Man cds from a specialist Record Shop in Greenwich Village which (at the time) I could not get in the U.K. and I still play them nowadays, mainly in my car. When I am stationary at traffic lights, this invokes mega “car seat dancing” from yours truly!  I hope you like my choice of Diblo track Laissez Passer I could think of dozens more, but maybe another time. If you want to find more out about Diblo, there’s loads online and some of his music is on You Tube.

I was pleased to receive positive feedback from Lex and others following my blog, and may I say that Friday night’s show was its usual excellent self.

First, I have discovered that many show biz people we know and love, don’t use the name they were born with, for a variety of reasons. Perhaps the most famous example is that of Lady Gaga, who, in my opinion over the years has underlined the fact that she is a very capable musician, in addition to being a good actor.
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (her real name) was apparently called “Gaga” by her producer Robert Fusari, who said that she reminded him constantly of Queen’s Radio Gaga, and indeed allegedly sang her the record, every time she came into the room! To cut a long story short, she reinvented herself by using the name Lady Gaga as her stage name.
Other name changes for professional purposes have included:-
Katy Perry (born Kathryn Hudson)
Nicki Minaj (Onika Tanya Maraj)
Lana del Rey (Elizabeth Woolridge Grant)
Natalie Portman (Natalie Hershlag)
Elton John (Reginald Dwight)
Winona Ryder (Winona Horowitz)
Lily James (Lily Thomson)
Sid Vicious (Simon Ritchie)
Adam Ant (Stuart Goddard)
Gary Numan (Gary Anthony James Webb)
There must be thousands more for me to fill pages and pages of this blog, but I won’t bang on, and I hope my spelling is correct. The above covers just a few!

Second I am requesting Lex to play Perfume by the Paris Angels this week. A bit about this lovable bunch of mop tops. They were only active from 1990 – 92 (more about that later), and were a seven piece band from Ashton-under-Lyne, which was originally in Lancashire, but in recent times is part of Greater Manchester. They were an indie band, playing alternative rock and electronic dance music, at first recording for Sheer Joy Records, and then Virgin. Perhaps the most well known member of the band was Paul Wagstaff, who later played for Black Grape, and then the re-formed Happy Mondays.
Perfume – arguably their best known song was released on Sheer Joy, then re-released on Virgin, and spent most of the Summer of 1990 in the indie Top Ten. They also released other singles, followed by a session for John Peel.
Regrettably following their recording of an excellent first  LP Sundew, Virgin was sold to EMI, and the Paris Angels were removed from Virgin’s plans, and an eagerly awaited second album was never released. At this time, singer Jayne Gill was expecting a child, and with no recording contract, the band called time on a short-lived career.
They, like a number of bands reformed, and in 2013 signed with Stereokill Recordings to finally release their second LP (recorded in 1992). However this deal fell through and the group decided to make the album a free download on Bandcamp Records. Since then I haven’t heard much of them, although I believe they are still working.

Titus writes:

Musically, my background is in listening to and promoting alternative music, rather than “chart bound sounds”. I gained almost all of my knowledge from listening to John Peel from 1967, until his untimely death in 2004. During that time, I listened to, bought, and recorded music from thousands of people and bands that I’d never previously heard of, plus enjoyed many John Peel Sessions. It taught me that there is so much good music out there, if you go and seek it out, rather than listening to the Chart Show week in week out.

One item that I have always found curious is the way music suddenly appears as theme music e.g. for television dramas. A couple of recent cases in point......”Strike”, an off beat detective series whereby the theme is a little known recording by Beth Rowley of a tune called “I walk beside you”  - what a great sound! .......and I’m sure many of you may have followed the recent series on ITV called “Six Four”, where an old Frankie Miller recording was selected as the theme “The Devil Gun”  – yet again, a great record that was never a runaway commercial success.

I tend to admire Lex’s love of alternative music, and in particular his love of bizarre artist(e) names. This is why this week I am requesting him to play a New Fast Automatic Daffodils track! They hail from Manchester and were active for 1988-1995, during the so called “Madchester” era (although they were never part of that scene). The original line up was Dolan Hewison (Guitar), Justin Crawford (Bass), Perry Saunders (Drums) and Andy Spearpoint (vocals). Their name originates from a poem written by a hero of mine called Adrian Henri , who fronted the Liverpool Scene in the late sixties/early seventies, and they did three sessions from Peel’s programme. The track I have requested is “Fishes Eyes”.
